A Tip to Get Started Running

I read this today at http://tinyurl.com/5wkmpq and can see how it can be a better way to get started running for some people. Basically, the idea is that instead of running a certain length of time, just run as far as you feel comfortable and slowly add to that. I'm rather torn on whether I think this or the couch-to-5k (http://tinyurl.com/4gtmz) idea is more for me. Both seem like good ideas, certainly.

When I got up to tolerating
When I got up to tolerating 4.5 mph on the treadmill for at least 25 minutes, then I would break that 25 into five 5-minute groups. For one minute of the five, I'd jog at 6.0. I did this for a few weeks until I was no longer ready to pass out and need oxygen. Then I made it two out of the five minutes (so a total of 10 minutes of running). Then I increased the speed to 7.0.
Once I was able to make it the entire 25 minutes at 7.0, I again broke it into five 5-minute groups. Then for one minute I would sprint...first group at 10 mph for a minute...then 9.5, 9, 8, 8.5. After two weeks of this, I was able to boost my baseline run to 8 mph for 25 minutes. So far, I haven't figured out a way to get a little faster. Maybe age is not on my side. :)
Started out slow
I started on the elypticle. I have been going four miles a day and then I started in June adding the treadmill. I got on it one day, after ten minutes as a warm up on the elypticle and I just kept going. That was the first time I can remember running without feeling as though I was going to fall over the first 30 seconds! Now I run on the treadmill at 6 mph for 20 minutes.

Once a person becomes an
Once a person becomes an active runner, it is vitally important not to forgo the shorter "sprint" type runs for long distance exclusively. The reason is that shorter sprints tap into a different way your body metabolizes energy than the long distance running. Both are important for elite fitness. So some days I'll break two miles into 8 rounds of 400 meter sprints. Some days I'll run two rounds of 800 meters at a fairly brisk pace and other days I'll run a 5K or a 10K.
Your body will adapt if you only use one style of running and then become less effecient at burning calories. You have to mix it up...its something called the Weider Principle of Muscle Confusion.
