Obese don't browse buffets

Patrons enjoy Greek food at a buffet during Greek Fest in 2007.

When it comes to eating at Chinese buffets, normal-weight diners have a much different approach from that of obese patrons.

Customers who are not heavy are more likely to browse the buffet before serving themselves, use chopsticks instead of forks, and sit with their backs to the food, a study by Cornell University's Food and Brand Lab shows.

Staying on track when dining out

For dieters, the danger of overindulging when dining out is a genuine concern.

When it comes to dieting these days, dieters have a multitude of avenues to explore as they attempt to eat healthier and shed a few extra pounds. With so many different approaches to diet, it’s hard to determine what’s good for you, what’s not so good for you, and what’s the best way for you to lose weight.

  • My husband loves to frequent Ryan's buffet. I don't really care for it, but since they send coupons...you are saving money...right? For me buffets are advertisements to gain pounds on pounds. I would rather spend extra money on one entree than to get it cheap and add to my weight. What are your thoughts about Ryan's? When was the last time you went? Do you like buffets?

  • Have y'all ever eaten at the restaurant in Rainbow Foods? I don't usually go for tofu, but since I've been on this flax seed kick, I'm wondering if they have any flax dishes on the menu?

    What else is good there?

  • There's a great little lunch place in the downtown area, near the Elite. It's called Mansell's, and looks like a little sandwich shop/magazine stand. But when you go in, there's a hot food line and also smoothies. You can get a great turkey sandwich on the most wonderful wheat berry bread. They also have marble rye, which daughter calls "chocolate bread." LOL

  • The Chinese buffet is one of the easiest ways for me to completely destroy my resolve to eat healthy, and while the comparatively small offering at lunch at Golden Dragon certainly has it's share of things I simply should not eat (but will) I find it to put more emphasis in vegetables in it's dishes than most of the buffets I have frequented in the past while.

  • Another good Asian place is Osaka, over there next to Smoothie King on Lakeland Drive (that shopping center at the Airport Drive intersection). It's split into a hibachi grill on one side and a sushi bar on the other. At lunch, they've got a list of specials, and the salmon is outstanding. It's hard to find a good salmon dish that's not too "fishy."

  • Counting calories sounds so methodical, so joy-killing, so boring.

Yet counting calories is the easiest way to keep track of your weight and to lose weight, if that's your desire.

  • There is nothing like going out to eat at your favorite restaurant. Ordering your favorite food. Having a nice conversation. It is definitely one of the great pleasures in life. Unfortunately, too much of it will help to put on the pounds. It really isn't the restaurants fault, they are just giving people what they want, which is good food and most of the really good foods are the most fattening.

  • You go out to eat and order off the "diet" menu, trying to be good, trying to stick to your healthy eating regimen. But ... the restaurants may not be doing you any favors:
