Behavior first step of fitness plan

long.jpg

As an exercise physiologist who has been in the personal training business for many years, one of the most frequent questions I receive is, "What is the best way to begin a fitness program?"

My answer is always that fitness begins with a behavioral change that helps initiate the desired physical change.

  • Alot of you have lost a LOT of weight like me. People don't recognize me unless they have seen me through this journey. Which I will say has benefited me. What differences have you seen in the outside world with people viewing you from over weight to thin?

  • Do any of you who has lost a significant amount of weight feel any anxiety about re-gaining weight? I've had a hankoring for peanut butter lately and because of it, I'm running about 5 pounds heavier the last week than normal. Well, that five pounds might as well be all 315 for me. Anyone else struggle with this?

  • I love Beth's column on the site today:
    http://www.getfitmississippi.com/node/1748

She goes over seven things you need to know to get skinny.
    • Fatty foods won't make you feel full longer.
    • Missing meals is not a good way to lose weight.
    • There are good foods and bad foods.
    • Low-carb diets don’t flush calories from the body.

  • Is it me or do you have a hard time really relating to people asking you or saying MAN YOU LOST A LOT OF WEIGHT... I went to get my drivers license renewed today and the officer looked at my old license and then at me and said the above.... then asked the hows and whys of it!

  • As a child, we valued what others thought of us. ..."You are too fat," "You are too skinny." "You need to eat more." "You need to push away from the table." "You need to exercise."

  • I'm not going to lie. I used to subscribe to Cosmo. I like some fashion tips and celebrity gossip and stuff from time to time. But the older I get, the more juvenille the magazine seemed. I'm not a single, career-minded, casual sex-having, bar-hopping party girl. I'm a wife. And a mother. And an administrative assistant. And I thought it was time to cut the cord. So I cancelled my subscription.

  • my husband has been retired for 3 weeks now and the one biggest change is in our eating habits. He likes 3 meals daily, and I haven't eaten that much in the past. Without changes, I am afraid of big weight changes. Hope this helps

  • I'm only 23. I'm in pretty good shape. I try to run three miles four days a week, and I try to walk three miles with my wife at least five days a week. Sometimes I hit both of those goals, sometimes I don't.

I'm still young enough not to have any major health problems, and most of my muscles heal pretty quickly. I run 5Ks when I can, and enjoy the rush of running.

  • Have you ever stayed home because you didn't feel like you look good enough to go out?

How often have you turned down an invitation to go to event because you didn't feel like your appearance would fit in?

  • I read on a NYT blog today about a study from the Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity at Yale University, about bias when it comes to weight gain. Here's an excerpt:

"It only takes a modest weight gain for a woman to experience weight discrimination, but men can gain far more weight before experiencing similar bias."

    (True!!)
